From Brian Setzer’s early work the the Stray Cats to reviving big band swing with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, one common factor has been his Gretsch hollowbody electric. This recreation of Setzer’s main stage guitar, “Smoke,” is an homage to one of his most beloved instruments. Combining vintage vibe with serious performance, this guitar is loaded with period-correct detail. From the ’59 headstock shape and pickguard to the trestle bracing of the single-cutaway hollowbody, it gets it right. Modern performance features include a compound-radius, rolled-edge ebony fingerboard on a soft-V neck and a pair of TV Jones Ray Butts Ful-Fidelity pickups. The Bigsby B6 vibrato tailpiece, pinned Adjusto-matic bridge and locking Gotoh tuners keep tuning stable, while allowing fluid vibrato “waggle.” As a final touch, the classic “Smoke Orange” lacquer finish gives it that truly classic Gretsch look.
