CADENZAS TO LIGETI CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN

In the original score of the violin concerto Gyorgy Ligeti challenges the interpreters of his work to invent their own solo cadenza. Thomas Ades gladly accepted this invitation and wrote a cadenza for the violinist Peter Heersthal in 2011. Ades adhered strictly to Ligeti’s specifications and wrote a fast-paced solo piece that exploits melodic material from all five movements and from which the final orchestral coda emerges as an inevitable result.
