In 1963, Gibson was interested in an aggressively modern look for a new solidbody guitar, so they turned to automotive designer Ray Dietrich. Dietrich had been responsible for both the sporty Packard Boat Tail Speedster and the iconic Checker Cab designs, so Gibson had faith that he could design a guitar that was as equally stylish and iconic.
